Gamkaskloof is a valley in the Swartberg so isolated that the people who lived there had no road at all until 1962.
The road they finally built is the reason you will be there: a single gravel track that drops off the top of the Swartberg through a set of switchbacks the locals called Die Leer, the ladder, and lands in a green strip of kloof where a whole community once lived entirely alone. They left. The valley stayed. It is a public road rather than a rock-crawl, which is exactly why a luxury 4×4 as delivered can do it, and exactly why nobody believes that until they have.
Day one is the descent. The first night is the contrast. Day two is the climb out and a hotel. Day three, home with the story still warm.
We meet at the foot of the pass with full tanks. Tyre pressures come down. We walk around every car with its owner and show them the four controls they have never pressed. Ten minutes, and you know more about your car than the dealership did.
The Range Rover Sport goes first. You follow in your own Range Rover, Defender, G-Class, Cayenne or Discovery. The Swartberg Pass first, with its dry-stone walls and hairpins and a view that does not look real, then the turn-off to Die Hel and the descent down the ladder. Every crossing has been driven that morning before you see it.
Low range, first gear, engine braking. Somewhere on the way down, the sentence we hear on every expedition: "I had no idea it could do this."
Champagne on ice. A private walk-in suite for each car: king bed, pressed white linen, a fridge, air-conditioning, and an outdoor shower open to the kloof. You unpack nothing except yourself.
Dust on the doors. A hotel on the inside.
Fire. Food from the district done properly: Karoo lamb that has been in the pot since lunch, bread from the coals, wine from over the mountain. Nothing that needed a plate warmer, nothing that apologises for where it is being served.
Four cars' worth of people who have just done what you have, and want to talk about it. Then the quietest sleep in the country.
Coffee that was ground, not scooped. Fruit. A light breakfast with the kloof still in shadow. Then back up the ladder and out over the Swartberg, with the photograph already on your phone, to a hotel at the foot of the pass: a long bath, a proper dinner, and a bed that did not have to be carried down a mountain.
Breakfast at the hotel, tyres back up to road pressure, and the drive home on tar in a car you will never look at the same way.
