Forgotten Routes takes owners of luxury 4×4s into the places South Africa forgot, in their own cars, behind a lead car that is just as standard, and ends the driving day at a private camp with a chef, champagne and pressed linen in a valley that has no business hosting one. The night before is spent in a hotel on the beach at Mossel Bay, where every expedition begins.
Most luxury 4×4s never leave the tar.
You bought it for what it could do. Then it did the school run.
The luxury 4×4s in this country's garages are engineered for wading depths, crawl ratios and approach angles, and driven, for the most part, to the wine farm. Not because their owners don't want the mountain. Because nobody has walked them to it and gone first.
Forgotten Routes is that walk. Not a 4×4 club and not a convoy collecting passes. A small, private expedition for people who own the capable car and would like, once, to find out what it was for, without the risk, the mud or the sleeping bag.
The lead car is the argument.
There are many ways to see gravel in this country. Most involve a heavily modified truck out front and a lodge at the end. Ours involves a Range Rover Sport exactly as Land Rover sold it: 21-inch wheels, standard-size all-terrain tyres, factory suspension, factory ride height. And at the end, a hotel that came down the mountain ahead of you.
You follow a showroom car over a pass most people only read about. You sleep on pressed linen. In the morning you drive out with a photograph that says something about your car that nobody on your street can say about theirs.

If you own a luxury 4×4 that has never been asked to do what it was built for, this is for you. If you have built your truck for exactly this, you don't need us, and you will be happier with the people who do it harder.
We take four cars on an expedition, one expedition a month at the end of the month, and we offer places in the order they are asked for. It is not first come, first served. It is a list, and a person reads it. That is the only way to keep a night out there feeling like what it is.

A place is priced per car, for two guests, in the band you would expect of a private retreat. We give you the number when we call. It is the same for everyone, and it is not the hard part.

- 02The lead car stays factory-standard. Standard-size all-terrains, nothing else.
- 03Descents are done in low range, first gear, on engine braking, and we show you how.
- 04The food is cooked by a chef, over fire, from what the district grows.
- 05Kitchen and power run on separate vehicles. If one fails, the night doesn't.
- 06Four cars, never more. The valley is not big enough for more, and neither is the fire.
The gravel is the excuse. The night is why you will come back.
