The camp at sunset
The camp

A hotelthat arrived before you did.

The first night of every expedition is spent here. These are not tents in the camping sense. They are private suites that happen to be standing in a kloof, made up before you arrive and taken down after you leave. The linen is white, and it stays white. The second night is in a hotel, so you get both.

Your suite

Dust on the doors. A hotel on the inside.

Each car has its own suite, its own privacy, its own piece of the kloof.

Nobody shares a wall with anyone. You walk in standing up, through a real door, onto a floor you do not think about, to a king bed made with hotel linen pressed that morning. There is a fridge with cold water in it. The air-conditioning is running. The shower outside is hot, and there is nothing between you and the cliff.

Standing height, a real door, a floor you do not think about.

02

King bed, white linen

Hotel-grade. Pressed. In Die Hel.

03

Air-conditioning

Silent, running all night on lithium. The kloof is hot. You will not be.

04

A fridge

Cold champagne on arrival and cold water at three in the morning.

05

Outdoor shower

Hot water, open to the kloof, nothing between you and the cliff.

06

Lighting

Warm, low, and yours to switch off. The stars do the rest.

The kitchen

A chef, not cottage pie.

Food from the district, done properly: braised, rich, built to travel and to sit.

Karoo lamb that has been in the pot since lunch. Bread from the coals. Fruit in the morning. Nothing that needed a plate warmer, nothing that apologises for where it is being served.

Champagne when the convoy arrives. Wine from over the mountain. Coffee that was ground, not scooped.

How it works

Two vehicles. Two systems.

Two support vehicles go into the valley ahead of the convoy. One carries the kitchen, the other carries the power. If one has a bad day, the night does not.

Vehicle one

The kitchen

Refrigeration, the chef's kit, the meal, on its own power, so the lamb never depends on anything else.

Vehicle two

The power

Solar and lithium, five to ten kilowatts, parked and silent. It runs the lights, the fridges and the air-conditioning all night without a generator anywhere in the valley.
